CPqD Optical Supervision Provides 5000% ROI
Brazilian operating company Brasil Telecom faces a lot of network threats
every day, with its 35,000 miles of optical fiber covering 10 Brazilian
states (nine thousand miles dedicated to the backbone). Up to 50 cable cuts
affect its fiber optics network every month, mainly due to unauthorized
digging, digging performed without adequate land mapping, and robbery.
“With
every major cable cut, we lose thousands of phone calls”, says Waldeck
Araujo Jr, Brasil Telecom’s CIO. “Every three minutes, a route between
Brasilia and Parana State’s capital Curitiba carries up to 30,000 calls. It
is easy to project this to one hour, so you have an idea of the financial
impact of such problems.” And the lost extends to the data communication
network as well.
To
resolve the problem, Brasil Telecom’s IT team called upon CPqD, which is
renowned for its research and development on optical communications. CPqD
developed a solution that has been deployed in the entire Brasil Telecom
operating area, with the project completed last October. What was the
result? The efficiency of the new system paid-off the investment during the
first six months of the deployment phase alone, reducing the time to detect
the failures from 3 hours to 3 minutes and the time to reestablish service
from 24 hours to 5 hours and 40 minutes, on average.
“Our
calculations show a ROI of 5000%, since the first supervision point was
installed”, says Araujo Jr.
Before CPqD’s solution, the IT group would need to investigate several
different systems, until arriving at the conclusion that the problem was
with the optical network. Once the problem was identified to be in the
optical cable, the technician would have to measure different cable
segments, at every 95 miles, until identifying the segment with the problem.
More analysis would be performed, until identifying the location of the
problem, with uncertainty of over 100 yards.
With
CPqD’s solution, Brasil Telecom identifies the exact location of the
failure, with uncertainty of only 10 yards. The solution was also integrated
with the existing fault management interface, improving the fault detection
process. The whole operating area was mapped into 105 network management
points, with each single point having the CPqD solution installed and
connected to an optical selector, an SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy)
multiplexer. This schema allowed for remotely monitoring several fiber
cables through only one entry point with multiple output ports
