Service Provider Offers Pre-Paid Wi-Fi Using CPqD's Solution
(San Jose, CA) Brazilian wireline operator Telemar and its wireless
subsidiary Oi have begun commercializing their wireless local access service
Velox Wi-Fi under a prepaid model supported by CPqD's BOSS Solution.
"Our research showed that prepaid is the model users want most for Wi-Fi
services," said Oi spokesperson Cristian Rocas. Telemar and Oi are the first
operators to offer prepaid Wi-Fi services in Brazil, he added.
"With Velox Wi-Fi, users from all over Brazil will have wireless
internet access in hotels and airports all over the country, without having
to pay a monthly fee," Telemar said in a statement.
Available pricing plans include a one-day unlimited pass, a single hour of
usage and a two hours usage within a three-month period. Prepaid card vendor
locations will appear instantly on users' wireless computer screens when
they are located within a Telemar Wi-Fi area.
Oi began Wi-Fi tests in January 2003 and is currently operating 120 hotspots
located in major airports, hotel chain partners, coffeehouses, and at Rio de
Janeiro's Maracana soccer stadium.
