CPqD Consulting Services Help Define Digital TV Standards in Brazil
(Brasília, Brazil; June 11, 2002) - The definition of standards for
Digital TV to be used in Brazil will be delayed until next year, according
to ANATEL, the Brazilian telecommunications regulatory body. The
Communications Ministry had already signaled that it would be very difficult
to keep the original decision schedule, which was set for July, 2002.
According to José Leite Pereira Filho, a member of ANATEL Board of
Directors, "the Brazilian goal for Digital TV goes beyond signal quality
improvements, encompassing a business model, transition criteria and
conditions to be met by the owners of the selected technology." Brazil is
studying three technologies: the North-American ATSC, the European DVB and
the Japanese ISDB.
"CPqD's Consulting Services Group will deliver in the next few
weeks its proposal for the business model and the transition criteria, but
an additional 6 months will be necessary to define the conditions to be met
by the technology owners", continues Pereira Filho.
